Headshot Preparation Tips

This will not be a “We can just fix it in Photoshop” photo shoot and I will tell you why

We are in the age of Instagram filters and Tik Tok filters, and people’s expectations for Photoshop have started to become unrealistic. Let me ask you this: have you looked a photo on social media with a filter on it and NOT realized it? No. You know it’s fake. You know CGI movies aren’t real. You know that the photo on the cover of a fashion magazine is fake. I’m here to tell you that people will know if your photo is heavily retouched or filtered and that is a poor choice for a corporate brand. The good news is that when we get things right during the shoot, your photo will look dynamite and give you that high-end look we are going for.

  1. “We can just fix it in Photoshop” is a huge misconception

We have certainly heard the term “Let’s just fix it in Photoshop.” I’m here to tell you that is just not realistic most of the time. Things like hairstyles, wrinkled clothing, 5 o’clock shadows, and ill-fitting clothing all make for photos that can’t be used. There is no Photoshop in the world that can fix these problems. Even on large shoots for big brands, we know to get clothing and hair right during the shoot because the whole shoot can potentially be scrapped if we miss these issues. There is no getting around the need for you to prepare for the shoot ahead of time by selecting the right clothing and preparing your hair and skin, or hiring someone to do so.

  2. Big Photoshop corrections will never look real

We have all seen examples of digital manipulation in movies, television, and photos. Have you ever thought a CGI film was real life, or a heavily edited photo was what the person actually looked like? Well, the people looking at your photo will always know when your photo is too edited. Large edits look fake, plastic, and can have an “uncanny valley'“ feel to them, even when done by the best high-end retouchers in the world.
